Nigerians can’t take more pain over fuel tax – ADC tells Tinubu

The African Democratic Congress, ADC, has urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to desist from imposing further economic hardship on Nigerians. This warning follows President Tinubu’s approval of a 15 per cent import duty on petrol and diesel. In a statement issued by its spokesman, Bolaji Abdullahi, on Friday in Abuja, ADC argued that the new tax would worsen the already severe hardship in the country, adding that it could push citizens to the brink of revolt. The party emphasised the need to encourage local refining, reiterating that such policies must not come at the expense of citizens’ wellbeing. According to ADC, introducing a fresh levy on imported fuel at a time when Nigerians are experiencing the excruciating pains of economic reform reflects insensitivity and poor judgement. “From all indications, this new levy is likely to push the pump price of petrol beyond N1,000 per litre. “If this happens, life would become even more unbearable for families, commuters, transporters, f...

Van Dijk mistimed a tackle and collided with his team-mate, Alexis Mac Allister, in the build-up to United’s goal scored by Bryan Mbeumo. Although Cody Gakpo made it 1-1, the visitors secured victory through Harry Maguire’s late header. Keane told Sky Sports: “When you’re a centre half and you’re a big player, last year we were on about who was going to stay and he signed a big contract, then you’re giving up loads of goals. I’d be looking at him and asking ‘what are you doing’? “Particularly as a big leader of the team. A couple of years ago we talked about United parking the bus here and we were critical. Now they’ve scored two today and two last year and you’re the centre half. “Always start with the man in the mirror. Van Dijk, if you’re the centre half and your team are all of a sudden giving up loads of goals, and you’ve got...

Although Arsenal dominated much of the game, they failed to go into the break ahead of their hosts. The breakthrough came in the second half when Gabriel Magalhães headed Bukayo Saka’s corner into the path of Leandro Trossard, who had the simple task of tapping it into the net. A penalty awarded to Saka was later overturned, but Arsenal held on to secure the win and now sit on 19 points, three clear of City. Mikel Arteta’s men are four points ahead of Liverpool, who host Manchester United tomorrow. Arsenal go three points clear at the top after win over Fulham

2026 WCQ: So unfortunate they’re now using calculator – Akpeyi sympathises with South Africa

Former Super Eagles goalkeeper, Daniel Akpeyi, has expressed sympathy for South Africa ahead of the final game of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers. Akpeyi finds it difficult to believe that Bafana Bafana supporters have now resorted to using calculators to determine the permutations that could see the team qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup despite the team’s hard work all along. Bafana Bafana were on course to claim the automatic ticket for Group C, but it is now a different story following a major setback after the football governing body, FIFA, noticed that they had broken a regulation and deducted three points from their tally. In their match against Lesotho, Bafana Bafana used an ineligible midfielder, Teboho Mokoena, who was on suspension. They played out a goalless draw with Zimbabwe on Friday, and the result further deepened their chances of travelling to North America next year. Speaking on SuperSport, Akpeyi, who is based in South Africa, said, “It’s quite unfortunate that...
