Club World Cup 2025: Palmeiras become first team to qualify for quarter-final

Palmeiras became the first team to qualify for the quarter-finals after they fought off Botafogo in a narrow 1-0 win on Saturday.

It’s the first time they have beaten their Brazilian rivals since 2023.

The game was a cagey affair, as both teams failed to break each other down, and it went into extra time.

In the 100th minute of the game, Paulinho scored what proved to be the decisive goal of the tie.

Paulinho took a neat first touch coming in from the right and found space in the box to guide a left-footed effort across John and into the far corner.

Palmeiras will play either Benfica or Chelsea in the quarter-finals.
