Club World Cup 2025: Palmeiras become first team to qualify for quarter-final

Palmeiras became the first team to qualify for the quarter-finals after they fought off Botafogo in a narrow 1-0 win on Saturday.

It’s the first time they have beaten their Brazilian rivals since 2023.

The game was a cagey affair, as both teams failed to break each other down, and it went into extra time.

In the 100th minute of the game, Paulinho scored what proved to be the decisive goal of the tie.

Paulinho took a neat first touch coming in from the right and found space in the box to guide a left-footed effort across John and into the far corner.

Palmeiras will play either Benfica or Chelsea in the quarter-finals.

Liverpool’s talisman Mohamed Salah has moved up to seventh in the Premier League’s all-time goalscoring charts. Salah scored in the 35th minute of their 4-1 win over Ipswich Town at Anfield on Saturday. The 32-year-old has been in inspired form for Arne Slot’s table-topping side this season. Salah netted his 176th goal in the division and has now moved clear of Thierry Henry (175) and one behind Chelsea legend Frank Lampard (177). Borno State Governor, Babagana Umara Zulum, has advocated for the establishment of large-scale irrigation farms as a key solution to addressing the escalating food insecurity in the Lake Chad Basin region.
