Renowned cleric gunned down in Plateau

A renowned cleric, Reverend Father Mimang Lekyil, was shot dead by suspected kidnappers during a late-night attack on his residence in Bokkos Local Government Area of Plateau State on Sunday.

According to reports, suspected kidnappers, forced their way into Reverend Lekyil’s home at around 9:00 p.m. while everyone was asleep.

A resident of the area, Bishop Ayuba Matawal, who confirmed the attack on the 70-year-old’s home, stated that two women were initially kidnapped.

He revealed that local vigilantes fought gallantly to rescue the women.

He said: “They shot the reverend. The two women in the house were kidnapped but later rescued by residents of the area.”

Bishop Matawal added that the cleric had been taken to Muna Mortuary in Bokkos.

After the killing, many Fulani homes were burnt, as angry residents blamed them for the attack.

Houses in the Fulani settlement in Dingak village were razed down, as confirmed by a Fulani youth leader, Sa’id Adamu.

The police are yet to comment on the incident.
