Ukraine: EU parliament plans to revoke Hungary’s voting rights over support for Russia

The European Parliament seeks to revoke Hungary’s voting rights in the EU, accusing the country of obstructing joint decisions.

Politico reports that the Parliament is also proposing to appoint the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kaja Kallas, as a full-fledged EU Foreign Minister.

The development comes after Hungary has repeatedly faced criticism in the European Parliament for violating the rule of law and democratic standards.

The EU accuses Viktor Orbán’s government of restricting judicial independence, media freedom, and civil society rights.

Brussels had frozen billions of euros in funding for Hungary, demanding that conditions be met to strengthen democratic institutions.

At the same time, Hungary has been using its veto power to block key EU decisions, including those on aid to Ukraine and sanctions against Russia.
