Image
Young professionals from Old Bende in Abia State have dismissed claims that Governor Alex Otti has been endorsed for a second term ahead of 2027. In a statement issued on Wednesday, the group, Old Bende Young Professionals, debunked the purported endorsement of Otti by the member representing Aba North/Aba South Federal Constituency, Hon. Mascot Ikwechegh, as “null and void” since it failed to meet all democratic criteria. In the statement signed by the president, Barr. Chima Charles Ogbonnaya, and the secretary, Dyke Chidozie Okwara, the group described those who participated in the event as impostors, noting that they did not have the mandate of the Old Bende people to take such a weighty decision. According to the group, Hon. Ikwechegh abandoned his legislative duties of representing the people of Aba to dabble in a matter he clearly lacked the power and capacity to address. It noted that, in the first instance, the governorship should rightly be occupied by the people of Abia ...

Champions League: Barcelona make special request to UEFA

Image
Barcelona president Joan Laporta has confirmed that the club has made a special request to UEFA. Laporta was speaking on Friday as he addressed the delays in returning to the Camp Nou. According to him, Barça asked UEFA to schedule their first Champions League game away from home. Under UEFA rules, a club is not allowed to use two different venues as home stadiums. This could thwart Barcelona’s hopes of playing all four games of the league phase at the Camp Nou. The LaLiga giants had initially planned a return to their iconic stadium in late 2024, but this was eventually pushed back. They were confident of hosting the Joan Gamper friendly game on August 10, having received approval for the modification of the Activity and Construction Licences. However, they have not yet been granted the First Occupancy Licence from the City Council, which prompted the club to move the Joan Gamper game against Como to the Estadi Johan Cruyff. In an interview with Mundo Deportivo, Laporta said:...

Tinubu used Buhari’s burial to appease North – ADC

Image
The African Democratic Congress, ADC, has accused President Bola Tinubu of using the burial ceremony of the late former President, Muhammadu Buhari, to whitewash his image. This was contained in a statement issued on Friday and signed by the party’s Interim National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi. ADC accused Tinubu of exploiting Buhari’s death for political gain. The statement said the tribute at the Federal Executive Council and the presence of Buhari’s son, Yusuf, was “a calculated PR stunt by an unpopular government.” According to ADC, Tinubu’s government spent the past year blaming Buhari for the current economic challenges in Nigeria, but has now made a U-turn following his death, in a bid to redeem itself, particularly in the North and among Buhari loyalists. “Grief is not a campaign strategy,” ADC said in parts of the statement. It added: “Nevertheless, we are confident that Nigerians can see through their grand deceit. “No public relations stunt can save a gover...

Evelyn Soorkwagh: Gov Alia’s infrastructure revolution – Transforming Benue into a modern cityscape

Image
With the wave of massive infrastructural development going on in Benue state under the administration of Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Alia, it is clear that by the end of his tenure, Benue, especially the Makurdi metropolis may reflect the urban sophistication of Abuja or highbrow areas of Lagos. The semi-urban areas may equally change from glorified timid rural areas to wear the looks of modernity. Since his election and assumption of office as the 6th democratically elected governor of Benue State, the government of Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Alia has shown a clear aversion to dilapidated public structures. His projects reflect vision and quality, as exemplified by the almost completed underpasses in Makurdi and Gboko; the modernization of infrastructure in public primary Schools, as well as the quality of urban and rural roads he is delivering across the state. But beyond these landmark projects, what stands out is his commitment to giving Benue a clean, modern look. A prime example is the compreh...

Three teams have now qualified for the semi-finals of the 2025 Club World Cup. Paris Saint-Germain became the latest side to progress to the final four, following a 2–0 victory over Bayern Munich on Saturday. The Champions League winners found a way to claim victory despite finishing the match with nine men. Desire Doué opened the scoring in what was a tightly contested affair, with a left-footed drive from outside the box that wrong-footed Manuel Neuer. Despite Pacho and Lucas Hernandez receiving straight red cards, PSG held on and even added a second goal through Ousmane Dembélé. They will now face the winner of the Real Madrid vs Borussia Dortmund quarter-final tie. The other semi-final will see Chelsea take on Fluminense.
