Five mine workers killed by explosion in Spain

Image
At least five workers have died, and several others were left injured following a blast at a mine in the Asturias region of Spain. The incident occurred at the Cerredo mine in Degaña, 280 miles northwest of Madrid, on Monday. A representative of the central government in Asturias, Adriana Lastra, spoke to reporters at the scene. According to Lastra, initial investigations revealed that the explosion may have been caused by methane forming an explosive mixture in the mine—a phenomenon known as firedamp. “Police are already investigating what happened; they are already at the scene,” Lastra said. The injured have been taken to hospitals in nearby cities, two of them by helicopter, suffering from burns and, in one case, a head injury. US Chief Justice Roberts rebukes Trump for attack on judge

Image
US Chief Justice John Roberts on Tuesday rebuked President Donald Trump for suggesting that the way to resolve a court dispute was by impeaching the judge. In a statement, Roberts said that for more than two centuries, it has been established that impeachment is not an appropriate response to disagreements over judicial decisions. Roberts’ statement followed Trump’s call in a social media post on Tuesday for the impeachment of a federal judge. Washington-based US District Judge James Boasberg had ordered the administration on Saturday to halt the removal of alleged Venezuelan gang members—a move Trump argued was authorised by an 18th-century law historically used only in wartime. “I’m just doing what the voters wanted me to do. This judge, like many of the Crooked Judges I am forced to appear before, should be impeached!!!” Trump wrote. Roberts, a conservative appointed by Republican former President George W. Bush, previously issued a similar rebuke in 2018, when he defended the...

The meeting, which Rutte described as unfortunate, plunged ties between Kyiv and its top military backer to a new low. “I think you have to find a way, dear Volodymyr, to restore your relationship with Donald Trump and the American administration. That is important going forward,” Rutte told Zelensky. The NATO chief said he had told Zelensky that they must respect what President Trump has done so far for Ukraine, reminding him that Trump was the one who provided Javelin anti-tank weapons to Ukraine in 2019, enablin...
